—————————————
***(Inhabited by the Etruscans and Romans, Montalcino was donated to the Abbey of Sant’ Antimo in the year 814 and, for the most part, remained an independepent municipality under the Sienese republic and strategic outpost against Florentine expansionism. Montalcino is most remembered for its valiant efforts in defending itself under long sieges as the last stronghold of Sienese republic. Allied with France's Francis I in 1526, its culminating moment in history came when Siena surrendered to Florentine and Spanish troops in 1555. Pietro Strozzi and two hundred families fled there to claim the new Sienese republic. It was during this time that a certain Blaise de Montluc, a leading figure in the city’s heroic resistance, asked to negotiate with the Florentines. To hide his fatigue and hunger, he was reported to have rubbed his cheeks with Montalcino’s red wine. Four years later, sixty in all contesting Italy, France yielded to Spanish hegemony in Italy through the Treaty of Cambrai. As a result, Montalcino and most remaining Sienese territory became a part of the Medici state under Cosimo I. It was the Medici who were first to appreciate and lend importance to Montalcino’s wines, reserving them for the most formal occasions or gifts to the papal court and heads of state. When the English arrived in Tuscany In the 17th and 18th Centuries, they acquired Montalcino’s wines, giving them further prominence. In the early 19th Century, and particularly around Siena, wines were renewed with new character. Brunello, first produced around 1870, acquired its fame for quality and aging in the harvests of 1888 and 1891. Since then, priceless bottles have been recorked in pomp and ceremony every 25 years.)
