***(According to legend, Montepulciano was founded by the Etruscan king Porsenna around 500 BC. For centuries it was contested between the Sienese and Florentine republics due to its important position both strategically and commercially. It became a part of the Medici state in 1511, assuming a distinct Renaissance imprint and flourishing in the arts architecture so well-preserved today. The ancient cellars integrated within the town’s historic center testify to the intimate link between Vino Nobile and Montepulciano. The Roman historian Livy refers to wine activites in Montepulciano in his “History of Rome.” In 1549, Pope Paul III’s cellarer estolled its virtues in calling it “vino perfettissimo.” In the 18th Century “Historical and Geographical Dictionary of Tuscany,” Repetti documents Montepulciano’s wine trade some 500 years earlier when it was already exported and collected abroad alongside Chianti and the best French names of the time. By far its greatest exponent was the doctor and poet Francesco Redi. In his panegyric “Bacchus in Tuscany” of 1685, the mythological Bacchus and Ariadne taste all Tuscany’s finest wines before drawing their conclusion: “Montepulciano is king of all wines.” It acquired the name nobile only in the second half of the 18th Century but, unfortunately, did not always live up to its reputation nor royal stature. Ridiculed at its DOCG designation in 1980, the quality and recognition since gained by Vino Nobile di Montepulciano have allowed it to once again assume its throne among the world’s wines.)
